DNL Associates was formed on 1 November 2005 when Japie van der Laan and Fanie Nel left the firm RSM Associates - Pretoria (a firm that was founded in 1969 by Huibert den Boer who was joined in 1973 by Japie van der Laan), taking along with them the clients they had been attending to during those times.

Japie was the sole-proprietor up until 1 March 2010 when the firm changed to a partnership.  The partners are:  Japie van der Laan (Managing), Albert de Lange, Manessa Strydom and Johannes Coetzer and they are ably assisted by Fanie Nel (IT Manager).  All have many years of experience in areas such as auditing, accounting, taxation, management consulting, corporate secretarial matters, designing and implementation of systems, etc.

All staff members are highly qualified for the work they do, enabling the firm to provide clients with a high level of excellent support.

The firm is located in Brooklyn which is part of the now fast developing eastern business area of Pretoria.  It has a strong client base in Pretoria and also many others in surrounding areas and further afield all over South Africa.

A wide range of services is rendered to more than 1000 clients in a broad spectrum of business activities, from personal tax matters to large corporate clients.  The firm enjoys an excellent relationship with its clients and is proud of its service to them.  The credit for the growth of the firm is given to the partners’ and staff’s continuous availability and personal attention to their clients’ matters.

The fee base is split approximately in the following ratios:

We can support IT-based accounting applications for clients (installation, training and running thereof), especially Pastel accounting.

Laptops are compulsory for all trainee accountants and other audit and accounting staff.  The firm’s own time and costing system, accounting and administration is also fully computerised.  Software is legally licensed and kept up to date and consists mainly of the following:

Pastel    Caseware

A comprehensive network is in place, enabling staff to share information and run internal and external email. 

All our clients are registered for SARS e-filing which assists with the effective completion and control over all tax returns and related queries.

Training of staff (and partners) is done on a continuous basis, comprising of in-house training, external training, on the job training, much reading and by attending Institute and other seminars.  Each trainee accountant undergoes a standard training program over a period of three years, thus ensuring that our audit philosophy and approach is adhered to.  Half day seminars are presented on a monthly basis to keep everybody up to date with the latest developments.

To maintain a high standard of auditing and field work, our audit philosophy concentrates on ensuring a structured and objective-orientated audit approach to each engagement.  The foundation of this approach lies in:

a heavy emphasis on audit planning structured by way of risk analysis,
objective-orientated control evaluation and audit testing.
The use of analytical review for substantive testing whenever possible.

In maintaining the above, audit time and cost is limited to a minimum without creating unnecessary risk for clients.

This approach assures a high quality of work presentation, documentation and review which matches acceptable standards.
